Camp Lutherhaven Receives Lilly Endowment Inc. Planning Grant to Enhance Hospitality, Safety, and Guest Experience

“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” —Psalm 127:1

For over 75 years, Camp Lutherhaven has been a place where guests feel at home—surrounded by nature, welcomed by friendly faces, and invited to grow in faith and community. Thanks to a recent grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., Camp is taking significant steps to ensure that spirit of hospitality not only endures but thrives for generations to come.

This summer, Lutherhaven was awarded a $150,000 Planning Grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., part of a broader initiative to help residential, youth-focused, faith-based camps in Indiana plan for sustainable growth. The one-year grant will fund a comprehensive master plan and facility assessment, setting the stage for long-term improvements in guest experience, safety, and campus functionality.

“This first phase is truly a blessing,” said executive director Keith Peters. “It gives us the space and resources to thoughtfully evaluate our campus, listen to our guests and staff, and prepare for the next generation of ministry here at Lutherhaven.”

Creating a Clearer Path for Guests

A key focus of the planning initiative is a proposed Welcome Center—a central hub that brings together guest reception, first aid, the camp store, and administrative offices under one roof.

Currently, visitors must navigate much of the property to locate check-in or office areas. The new Welcome Center will change that, offering a clearly marked point of arrival just beyond the main Camp Lutherhaven sign. This welcoming space will help guests feel at ease and oriented from the moment they arrive.

“This change will make a world of difference for parents dropping off their children and for rental groups,” Keith explained. “From the moment they drive in, they’ll know exactly where to park, where to check in, and where to find help.”

Improving Safety and Streamlining Operations

The envisioned Welcome Center will also enhance safety and efficiency across campus. By centralizing administrative and check-in functions, guests can enjoy a smoother, more organized arrival process—no more juggling forms and luggage across multiple locations.

Additionally, delivery drivers and visitors will no longer need to wander through camp to find the office, creating a safer and less disruptive environment. A modern, private first aid area within the Welcome Center will also support responsive medical care, offering both peace of mind and improved service to campers and families.

Rooted in Nature, Hospitality, and Community

While the upgrades focus on functionality, the heart of the project remains deeply rooted in Lutherhaven’s core values: connection with God, community, and creation. The proposed design includes large windows, open shared spaces, and abundant natural light—elements that reflect the beauty of the outdoors and the warmth of the camp’s ministry.

“Even as we design new spaces, we want them to reflect the same values that have guided us for more than 75 years,” Keith shared. “Community, relationships, and a love for God’s creation are the soul of this place. The Welcome Center is not just about better buildings; it’s about better experiences for everyone who walks through our doors.”

Looking Ahead with Gratitude and Vision

To guide this work, Lutherhaven has partnered with HWC Engineering and Design Collaborative and appointed Jim Berning as project manager. A stakeholder event on November 18 at 7 p.m. will invite friends, supporters, and community members to hear updates and offer input into the evolving vision.

Additional funding to bring the full project to life may become available by year’s end, opening the door to move forward with final design and construction.

Through each phase, Camp Lutherhaven remains focused on its mission—walking in gratitude, faith, and a clear vision for the future.

“In every step, we see God’s hand guiding this process,” Keith reflected. “This grant allows us to dream faithfully—to imagine spaces that help us serve our guests more safely and efficiently, creating an environment where they are free to let God strengthen their faith through His ministry at Lutherhaven.”

Camp Lutherhaven’s mission inspires its leadership to create spaces where people can grow in faith, community, and love. In this new chapter, the camp continues that legacy—inviting all to gather, serve, and work together for the glory of God.

…that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit… so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.”—Ephesians 3:16-17
