When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Lutherhaven had to close its doors to guest and retreat groups from mid-March through June of 2020. As things continued to worsen, Lutherhaven also made the difficult decision to cancel over half of its summer programming.
In order to save money and preserve cash flow, Lutherhaven cut utilities and other expenses, suspended non-essential staff, full-time staff furloughs, a full-time staff person’s early retirement, and benefit reduction. It has also included securing a PPP and EIDL loan from the government.
Lutherhaven is among a handful of camps to still open a partial summer camp in 2020. The Lutherhaven staff and board of directors worked hard to adopt new guidelines from the CDC and the American Camping Association, secure and train summer staff, and adapt programming, policies and facilities to accommodate a new and ever-changing COVID-19 environment.
During the summer of 2020, because of Covid-19, Lutherhaven lost the chance to serve over 1000 campers. This is a drop of 73% from normal camper attendance. These children and youth missed out on an adventure to strengthen their faith in the midst of God’s creation. They also lost the opportunity to grow in self-esteem, social skills, independence, relationships, and more. Summer 2021 is also likely to be significantly affected by Covid-19.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Lutherhaven had to close its doors to guest and retreat groups from mid-March through June of 2020. Looking forward, groups are projected to be two-thirds fewer than normal for the foreseeable future.
Because of the retreat and school group cancellations, being down so many campers during summer 2020, and a future outlook that is very uncertain, Lutherhaven is projecting a loss of over $300,000 as a result of Covid-19. This represents 50% of Camp’s normal total budget!
